Lawson Just Avoids Loss In Bowls

The national singles champion, S. E. Lawson (Burwood), was one of the unbeaten players after the first day of the Christchurch Bowling Centre’s open singles tournament, yesterday.

But Lawson came close to losing a life in his last game when he came from behind over the last three ends against L. Bowman (Christchurch W.M.C.) to win 15-14. A three on the nineteenth head, and a two on the twentieth, brought the scores level and on the twenty-first head Lawson rolled what proved to be the deciding bowl on to the kitty. Bowman was un[able to take the shot and was not in a position to burn the head. Fine Drawing A former winner of the Maddison Trophy, E. C. Colville, kept his two lives intact when he won his last game of the day against K. Robinson (Rakaia) 22-8, in a match characterised by some fine drawing in windy conditions which both players overcame well. Colville led Robinson from the start with a four, and although the Rakaia clergyman appeared to be recovering In the middle stages with points on three successive ends, he was unable to bridge the gap. On the sixteenth end Colville’s first delivery rolled on to the kitty, but Robinson’s knocked it away and the shot was in doubt until the last deliveries. Robinson’s last bowl was on target but it rolled on to Colville’s to give the latter the shot. Colville recovered his grip on the game to win comfortably. The performance of W. Wilkinson (St Albans) on the Shirley green was exceptional. He scored 110 points in his four games and conceded only 25. He won his first game,

against Flute (Redcliffs), 40-1. Another former Maddison Trophy winner, D. McNeil (Rangiora) ended the day with two lives. Among those who failed to I qualify were Deavoll (Sydenham), Sams (Barrington), and Trenberth (Christchurch). The wind at many greens troubled players, and its inconsistency caused some untidy drawing. The second day of the tournament is next Wednesday, January 31.
