Rally Row Averted
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) MONTE CARLO. The first indication of the possible outcome of the 1968 Monte Carlo motor rally came on Tuesday with the special speed tests along the 930-mile drive to Vals-Les-Bains and back. A German, French or Italian victory appeared likely. The times clocked on the first of the seven speed tests showed that the powerful German Porsches, the Italian Lancia Fulvias and the French Renault Alpines were too speedy on the dry roads for their rivals. The British Mini-Coopers, winners four times in the last five years, lacked speed and were not given a great chance to win again this year. At a meeting between B.M.C. officials and the rally organising and technical committees, the validity according to the regulations of the Minis’ carburettors was discussed at length. The organisers finally accepted once and for all that the carburettors met with the regulations and said that the matter would not be raised further.
