HEENAN CROQUET PLATE TO McNAB

J. McNab, of Christchurch, won the Heenan Plate for the runners-up in sectional play in the open championship when he beat Mrs G. Collins (Lower Hutt) in the New Zealand croquet tournament at Christchurch, yesterday. Mrs Collins was out of the contest with three losses in the play-off, but McNab had to beat her otherwise he would have had to play H. C. Ford (Wellington) in a further play-off for the Heenan Plate. McNab finished unbeaten and Ford, with one loss, was second. During the play-off McNab gained a considerable lead when Mrs Collins hit in and make a break to the peg, attempting to peg out McNab’s rover ball. The attempt failed and McNab went on to take the game. Many games in the championship doubles were closely contested. The main interest was in the game between A. E. Saalfeld (Australia) and his partner, Mrs S. Orwin (Lower Hutt), who beat W. B. C. Paynter (Lower Hutt) and Mrs R. A. Clarke (Gisborne)

in an exciting game, 26-25. J. Prince and Mrs B. A. Jarden (Lower Hutt), the doubles title-holders, reached the semi-finals of the one-life section after beating A. G. F. Ross (Hastings) and K. Woollett (Ohakune). Mrs G. G. Bishop and A. Boyd (Ashburton), both plus handicap players, have won several games against scratch and minus players, and still retain two lives.
