ADDINGTON MARKET Excellent Offering Of Fine-wool Sheep

Some excellent lines of fine-wool sheep were yarded in the two-tooth and older ewe section when the store sheep sale was held at the Addington market yesterday..

Most of the two-tooths made $5 to $6, and one sale was made at $7.05. Buyers in this section showed a marked preference for the finer-wool sheep, which showed a definite margin over the Romneys.

Always a feature offering at this time of the year, the four-year-old and five-year-old Corriedale ewes from the Longbeach estate near Ashburton brought up to $6.05.

In spite of the recent advance in the fat lamb schedule and also a good rain, the market for store wether lambs tended to be erratic, opening on a slack note but improving as the sale progressed. Most of the average to good lambs brought about $3.30 to $3.80, and the top lambs ranged to about $4.50. An occasional sale was made at more than $5.

The yarding totalled 15,202 head, compared with 15,250 last week, and included 9464 wether lambs (7355 last week), 659 ewe lambs (1575), 1242 two-tooth ewes (1290), 3718 older ewes (4588) and 119 wethers (442). An unhappy aspect of the lamb sale was that a considerable proportion of the yarding required to be dipped. Store Lambs Considering that there wai a sharp rise in the prime lamb schedule last week-end and there has been a good rain in many areas since the last sale, the wether lamb sale did not show the Arming that might have been expected. The sale tended to be rather erratic. It opened on a fairly slack note before a smallish gallery but the number following the sale soon Increased and as the larger offerings of better-known lambs were reached there was a recovery to late rates, and in the concluding stages offerings of better quality lambs, of which there were possibly fewer on offer this week, were selling on a strong note. Only a few ewe lambs were included in the selection and these were not of very attractive quality and generally made rates no better than wether lambs. The over-all offering at 10,123 head was more than 1000 up on last sale. Up to about a third of It was drawn from the Kaikoura district and north.

Among the finer wool wether lambs the best made from about 34 to $4.50, with an odd sale to $5.05, average to good from $3.40 to $3.80, and light from $l.OO to $3.10. The pick of the Romneys realised from $4.10 to $5.05. average to good made from $3.30 to $3.80, and others ranged from $2 to $3. The better Down cross lambs also brought from about $3.80 to $4.45, with average at $3.20 to $3.80, and others down to $2. For only a small selection of ewe lambs values ranged from about $2.50 to $4.50.

McDougall (Cashmere), 150 Corriedales at ■ Two-tooth Ewes The two-tooth ewe offering, which was of similar size to last week at 1242 head, included a useful representation both of Corriedale and Romney ewes and the general standard of the selection was distinctly better than last week. The sale opened quietly with values mainly between $4 and $5, but subsequently It settled down at mainly between $5 and $6 and although the sale gave the impreslon of having Improved, a good deal of the strength of the sale could be attributed to the presence of well regarded, attractive lines of young ewes, particularly fine wools. Buyers showed a marked preference for the finer wool sheep and while these predominated in the selection they were making much better money than the Romneys. However, compared with lamb values and also older ewes twotooths looked very reasonable buying. The best of the fine wool twotooths ranged from about $5.75 to $6.55, with one sale at $7.05 —this latter price was paid for Corriedales from T. G. Forrester (Rotherham)—average to good young ewes sold from about $5.40 to $5.80 and others made from $4.10 to $5.30. For good Romney-Corrledales values ranged from $5.50 to $6.10, and the best of only a moderate sized offering of Romneys made from $5.50 to $5.65, with average to good at $5 to $5.50 and others down to $4.25. Among quotable sales of twotooth ewes were:— Balllndalloch Farm, Ltd (Culverden), 59 Corriedales at $5.90; H. M. Chapman (Broadfield), 242 Corriedales at $5.10 to $5.80; W. J. Hoban and Son (Culverden), 70 Corriedales at $6.55; Worl-

Ingham Farms, Ltd (West Eyreton), 76 Corriedales at $6.20: R. S. Harrison (Domett), 279 Rom-ney-Corriedales at $5.50 to $6.10: T. G. Forrester (Culverden), 109 Corriedales at $5.90 to $7.05. Older Ewes As was the case in the twotooth section, the older ewe entry included a number of well-known lines of very good fine wool ewes and these brought good money, but for the balance the market was probably on a par. More Uum» 1000 four and five-year-old Corriedale ewes, which are always a feature of the market at this time of the year, were forward from tha Longbeach Estate near Ashburton. These big framed, wellgrown sheep sold from $4.80 to $6.05 for four-year-olds and at $4.60 to $4.90 for five-year-olds. Last year the Longbeach four-year-olds made from $6.40 to $7.45 and the five-year-olds from $5.40 to $6. Four-year-old Corriedales from the estate R. L. Jameson (Nuklwai, Culverden), also made to $5.40 and five-year-olds from G. R. Gould (The Hermitage, Rotherham), ranged up to $4.75. The best of the four and five-year-old fine wool ewes sold from $4.80 to $5.65 with an odd sale to $6.05, average to good ranged from $3.80 to $4.60 and others made from $1.90 to $3.50. Younger fine wool ewes in the selection made from about $4.10 to $4.70 for four-tooths. Romney ewes made up to about $4.20, with sheep, including a sprinkling of young ewes bringing about $4, and others with a low mouth and only a little wool ranging from $2.65 to $3.
