WARNING GIVEN

Wheat Smut Disease The Department of Scientific and Industrial Research had “panicked a little” over the discovery of bunt, or stinking smut, disease in wheat, for it appeared to. be an isolated case. Mr A. L. Mulholland told a meeting of the North Canterbury Federated Farmers’ executive yesterday. “We were unfortunate enough to discover it in our own crop, and had it checked by the department,” he said. “It has not been seen In Canterbury for 20 years. The crop was grown from certified, treated seed. “There could be other cases in crops not investigated by the department, and I would caution farmers to keep a close watch. If they keep infected wheat for seed, they could be in for a packet of trouble." In his own case, said Mr Mulholland, the headers would have to be fumigated. The smut eould be brought in by contractors’ plant. The Aotea wheat affected on his farm bad developed in the normal way, but he had noticed unusual heads, looking better, if anything, than normal heads, but when opened up they were full of nothing bitt black dust
