BEACHES CLEARED
School Of 100 Sharks (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Jan. 24. Beaches between Howick and East Coast Bays were cleared late this morning after the Navy fisheries protection launch Kahawai sighted a school of 100 sharks off the Rangitoto beacon. The launch reported that the sharks ranged in size from 6ft to Bft. Police were informed and immediately issued warnings on all beaches in the Auckland area. Waiheke Island was also notified. An amphibian aircraft which flew over Rangitoto channel about 11 a.m. sighted two hammerhead sharks estimated to be 10ft long, but did not sight the large school. The Port Waikato Surf Lifesaving Club cleared the water of swimmers at 1 p.m. when a school of about 20 sharks was sighted beyond the line of breakers. A patrol member said there were about 50 people in the water. Board riders came in from the furthest line of breakers when the siren was sounded. Swimmers moved into the river mouth away from the surf.
