Arts Society Members To See Seven Homes
Seven Christchurch homes chosen by leading architects will be visited by members of the Canterbury Society of Arts and their friends on February 17. The object of the visits is to promote interest in fine domestic architecture and assist the gallery building fund. It is hoped that the way in which the owners have arranged their homes around the architectural design will be of particular interest.
All the homes are in the Fendalton area. The owners and the architects are: Mr and Mrs J. C. Power, 9 Burrows Place (Cowey and McGregor); Mr and Mrs J. S. Fletcher, 30 Newbridge Place (Hall and MacKenzie); Mr and Mrs L. B. Stevens, 39A Waiwetu Street (H. Francis Willis and Son); Mr and Mrs T. K. Papprill, 31 Idris Road (Warren and Mahoney); Miss K. Scannell, 30 Idris Road (P. J. Beaven, Hunt and Associates); Mr and Mrs I. A. Seay, 24 Desmond Street (Helmore, Cotterill and Hall), and Mr and Mrs S. E. Mair, 22 Desmond Street (Helmore, Cotterill and Hall). More than 50 homes were nominated by leading architects. From these, the society’s council selected seven, all new and reasonably close to each other.
Children and dogs will not be allowed to accompany members during the inspection. Members have also been asked not to smoke. Later the society expects
to give members the opportunity to see other modern homes designed by other architects in Cashmere, Scarborough, Redcliffs, Merivale, and other parts of Fendalton.
