Four N.Z. Records In One Swim By A. B. Kindred

A. B. Kindred smashed the New Zealand all-comers’ and resident records for 1650 yd and 1500 metres freestyle with a display of power at the Centennial Pool last night.

Although still receiving treatment for a back injury Kindred swam the 30 lengths of the pool in splendid style to come within fourfifths of a second of breaking the 18min barrier. He took almost lOsec off the all-comers’ record, held by the Australian, P. A. Reynolds, and more than 17sec from R. D Walker's resident mark. Both times were established at the 1965 national championships. Tui Shipston capped this grand effort with two more national record-breaking swims—in the 220 yd freestyle and 220 yd medley. She set new resident marks of 2rain 20.8 sec and 2min 3.4 sec respectively, and her time for the medley was a bare O.lsec away from the all-comers’ figure held by the American. Miss J. Humbarger.

The two champions were competing in the fifth session of the Canterbury title meeting, and their efforts helped to take the records tally for the championships past the half-century mark. With one night of swimming remaining, the meeting has produced 54 new centre records as well as Kindred's and Miss Shipston's new national marks.

The national title-holder for the event, Kindred has usually swum his 1650 yd races quickly in the early stages, then relaxed the pressure before producing a strong finish. Last night, however, he tried for two even halves—and the result was spectacular. Strong Finish •

After swimming the first quarter-mile in 4min 50sec, he settled to consistent laps of 71sec, and finished strongly with a last lap of 69sec. Kindred was just under the national mark of 9min 42.25ec as he passed the half-mile. Miss Shipston cut half a sec ond from the 220 yd and 200 metres freestyle marks she set last month, and was almost 3sec faster than her own figure for 220 yd and 200 metres medley. Miss J. Wright, who has chased Miss Shipston home in almost every title race at the meeting, achieved her best times in gaining two more second places last night. Junior Marks The best of the performances by the age group competitors last night was the 220 yd breast stroke in 3min 3.4 sec by Angela Bunt (Wharenui). A wisp of a girl with a commendable technique, she beat Michelle Richardson, last year’s senior champion, and broke the centre junior, under-14 and under-13 records. A former junior of high standing. R. J. Wilson (Sprey don) came of age with a win in the men’s 220 yd breaststroke final, in 2min 57.35ec. His toughest opposition came from M. J. M. Hay, aged 22, three times winner of the title, whose 2min 57.55ec was close to his best former effort. The Rangiora girl, Gknys Dacombe, who has displayed excellent form this week, won the junior girls’ 110 yd freestyle title in Imin B.6sec. Catherine Whiting beat Miss Dacombe in the 220 yd final, to thwart her rival’s bid for the triple crown.

Wharenui has won 33 titles, followed by Elmwood 28, Spreydon 25, Sockburn Park 19, North Beach and Jeliie Park four each, St Albans two, and Christchurch one.
