STAFF FOR HOTELS

No Shortage In South Island The secretary of the Canterbury Hotel Workers’ Association (Mr L. Short) yesterday said that he did not know of any jobs vacant in South Island hotels other than two at Invercargill. These vacancies had just come in, and would be filled by two of five Australian girls already in Christchurch seeking jobs. Mr Short was commenting on a report by the industrial officer of the Hotel Association of New Zealand (Mr T. Sheehy) that New Zealand hotels were still short of staff and would have to recruit more Australian girls. Mr Short said the vacancies must be in North Island hotels. The position could change when university students left hotel jobs to return to their studies. Mr Short said the peak of the tourist season would be in the next two months. It appeared that the Hotel Association was trying to ensure against a staff shortage when the students returned to university.
