University Salaries

Sir—The president of the Association of University Teachers says that the Government must once again raise university salaries. It is true, of course, that devaluation has worsened New Zealand’s competitive position in the acquisition of university staff. But the fact is, New Zealand cannot afford another automatic salary raise just now. Nor is it equitable that the salaries of university teachers should rise so far beyond the (admittedly low) salaries of all other public servants in New Zealand. What the Government could indeed do, is to lighten the income tax load in the $4OOO-$BOOO bracket—as the Ross Commission has already recommended. But the universities themselves must find some remedies. In this small country, we have six universities teaching a full range of subjects. Some subjects could well be cut out at some universities. Then there would be more money available for higher salaries in the remaining subjects.—Yoi.s, etc., PUBLIC EYE. January 24, 1968.
