Montini Wins High-weight

(from Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON. Montini and Second Cast, both from B. F. Deacon’s Hawera stable, won the Wellington Racing Club’s on-course double at Trentham on Saturday and returned a dividend of $24.55. Montini won the Te Mania High-weight fairly handily, but Second Cast just lasted for a nose victory over Impetus in the Pencarrow Handicap. Second Cast was the last foal produced bv the Gold Nib mare. Fourteen darat. which was a half-sister to the Auckland Cup winner. Rev. _____

Second Cast was the each way favourite. The stable apprentice, M. R. Campbell, had her in the middle of the field after a furlong, and brought her forward on a steady run to reach a short lead near the furlong. All expectations for a decisive win by the Copenhagen II filly disappeared with the late arrival of Impetus in his storming run down the outside. Impetus arrived only one stride too late, and the ground he had lost at the start must have cost him a great winning chance. Impetus, a brother of the classic winner. Sobig, has been very disappointing at times, but his latest run held out strong hopes for a win later at the meeting. Impetus completed a concession double worth $59.05. Sasinaz, a fairly heavhy backed runner for S. A. Brown s stable, was a creditable third, but was in a gap behind the winner and runner-up. One of the biggest disappoint ments of the race was the Ric- j carton-trained Cosmetic. She had the speed to run in the leading bunch to the straight, but she dropped right out and beat only one straggler. RICCARTON FAVOURITE Riccarton supplied the favourite for the Camp Handicap —Shipmaster. Mr A. N. Smith s rangy three-year-old had it won at everv stride but the last one. In his last shortening stride he was nosed out by Giant Size,

a big four-year-old from Matangi. Giant Size and Shipmaster had matched strides in the lead in the middle stages before the Riccarton bay went ahead. A furlong out Shipmaster had a short but handy lead, and was in no great bother in the face of attempted challenges from horses wider out on the track. But G. P. Chitty had been sitting quietly on Giant Size for a good way down the straight, and the chestnut responded generously when called on. FIRST WIN Landscape, an unlucky second in two starts at holiday meetings, finished brilliantly to beat

■ the hot favourite, Fashion Plate, and 13 others in the Fitzherbert • Handicap at Trentham on SatI urday. > This was Landscape’s first win i in seven starts for Mr L. J. i Adams, and steady improvement > in her form and gameness was ! reflected in a solid run in the i hands of the light-weight, N. . Eastwood. Fashion Plate and Shantung ■ had a sustained tussle close , behind Landscape, and the I camera was unable to separate them. The best performer of the I others was Kurrent, which im- - proved several places to be t fourth.
