EIGHT IN TROUBLE
Rescuers In Strong Rip (N.Z. Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, Jan. 21. Seven teen-age swimmers were swept out to sea at Opunake Beach today when they went to the rescue of another swimmer in difficulties. About 5.30 p.m. Mr S. Hohaia, aged 19, of Opunake, was caught in a strong rip and swept away. Five of the seven who went to his rescue, Alison Trotter, aged 12, t Pauline Rangi, 12, Frank Tipene, 16, Deborah Dobbin, 13, were swept on to rocks, and Francis Hall, aged 17, drifted about 150 yards along the coast before he made the shore. Raewana Trotter, aged 17, Jim Rangi, 16, and Stanley Hohaia, 19, were finally helped from the water by surf club members. Three of those rescued were taken to the Cottage Hospital at Opunake but noone was seriously hurt.
