Sporting Yachtsman

Sir,—L. J. Cooper in complimenting you on “The Best Policy” this morning, shows he knows little of the rules of yacht racing. The belated admission that the yacht had fouled a marker buoy, only shows that the yacht should have retired immediately (see rule 33) unless wrongfully caused by another yacht, in which case a protest flag should have been flown. This would be true sportsmanship. If he awaits making his decision until after crossing the finishing line, I can only conclude he does not know the rules, and should not be taking part in a New Zealand championship.—Yours, etc., WALTON H. BEANLAND. January 16, 1968.
