TROTTING Chance For Squires’ Hanover Today

Squire’s Hanover, which has done well over most distances lately, could revert to sprinting successfully at Washdyke today.

Squire’s Hanover is one of the strong form runners in the Taiko Handicap on the first day of the Timaru Trotting Club’s summer meeting.

The last time Squire’s Hanover raced she was placed over two miles at Reefton. A start earlier she was successful over 13 furlongs at Hororata.

One of the strongest form runners with which Squire’s Hanover will have to contend is Golden Splendour. If Golden Splendour can sprint as well as he runs a middle distance and beyond he will certainly take beating. His record lately does not reveal sprinting talents but he has gained two wins and a second from his last four starts so he does not lack ability. Nonnie Hanover, a faststart sprint winner at Reefton, will probably have her share of supporters and there could be solid backing also for Loyal Friend and Palman. But the most difficult for Squire’s Hanover and Golden Splendour to beat may be Authentic, which has failed twice since her close second to Young Lad in a sprint at Waimate last month. The T.A.B. double will be run on the South Canterbury and Kerrytown Handicaps. Byebye Bill, Golden Fleece and Wipe Out are a fancied trio in the first leg The best second-leg chances may be Young Lad, Winning Song and Benmore.

Another attraction today will be the Timaru Nursery Stakes in which Garcon Roux might be the popular fancy. The Nursery Stakes will be the second leg of the oncourse concession double. The first leg of this double will be the Salisbury Handicap for which Betsy Morano is picked. Further fine weather is forecast so the track will be firm.
