SUB-ASSNS' MATCH

Ellesmere And Hurunui Draw

Hurunui drew with Ellesmere in their sub-association cricket match at Culverdcn on Wednesday. Ellesmere won the toss and batted on a damp pitch. The openers, G. Doak and P. Chamberlain, began very quickly and confidently, but after Doak went at 40, the batsmen became bogged down against the Hurunui attack, and at lunch were 74 for six wickets: Chamberlain was not out on 28.

Rain stopped play until 3.30 p.m., and drizzle interfered with play from then on. Ellesmere was all out at 4.50 p.m. for 134. P. Chamberlain top-scored with 39, and M. Chamberlain was most aggressive of the Ellesmere lot.

A. F. Rapley and D. Wyllie were the spearhead of the Hurunui attack, bowling 33 overs and 23 overs respectively. Rapley took four wickets for 47, and Fowler, in spite of labouring under a foot iniury, took three for 11. from 10 overs. The captain (P. Rutherford) tidied up the innings with two wickets for equal runs. Hurunui batted for half an hour in steady drizzle, losing one wicket for 25 runs.
