Two Unbeaten Teams In Women’s Softball
(New Zealand Press Association > WELLINGTON. Rain and a cold wind made conditions unpleasant for the opening day of the national women’s softball championships yesterday.
The biggest surprise was the failure of last year's champion, Auckland, which suffered a heavy loss to Waikato but redeemed itself with a good win over Canterbury. Only Wellington and Waikato, with three wins each, remain undefeated, while Auckland and Hawke's Bay each have two wins. Manawatu, Canterbury, Southland, Otago, and Hutt Valley had one win each.
Canterbury’s only success was a huge, 24-0, win over North Otago, but it went down by the odd goal to both Hawke’s Bay and Auckland. Results:—
Bensel Cup.—Auckland 9. Manawatu 5: Canterbury 24, North Otago 0: Otago 11, Southland 1; Wellington 6, Hutt Valley 5: Waikato 5, Hawke's Bay 0: Hutt Valley 4, Marlborough 2: Wellington 21, Southland 1; Manawatu 22, North Otago 0; Hawke’s Bay 3. Canterbury 2: Waikato 11, Auckland 3: Wellington 19. Otago 13: Southland
12. Marlborough 11: Waikato 9. Manawatu S; Hawke's Bay 12. North Otago 2; Auckland 7, Canterbury 6. Senior B.—Hawke's Bay 12. Hutt Valley 6: Otago 8. Waikato 3: Wellington 9, Canterbury 2; Hawke's Bay 10. Wellington 6; Otago 23, Hutt Valley 17; Canterbury 7, Waikato 0.
