Keen Fisherman
(N.Z. Press Association) DUNEDIN, Dec. 28. A 31-year-old wool scourer admitted in the Magistrate’s Court today to stealing a woman’s watch, valued at $5O, and then using it as a sinker while fishing off the wharf at Port Chalmers. Mervyn Arthur Bryant pleaded guilty before Mr T. A. Ross, S.M., to stealing the watch, the property of Gaynor Merle Collis, at Mosgiel at the week-end. He was remanded until Tuesday for a probation
officer’s report and sentence.
Detective Senior-Ser-geant N. H. Bennett said Bryant had attended a party at Mrs Collis’s on Christmas Day. The watch, which had been left on a dressing table in a bedroom, was found to be missing at 11.15 a.m. the next day. Bryant was interviewed but denied taking the watch. Further information came to hand yesteri day and he was again interviewed and this time frankly admitted the offence.
He said he went fishing at Port Chalmers yesterday afternoon and used the watch as a sinker. However, the line broke and the watch was lost.
Mr Ross asked Bryant why he had used the watch for a sinker.
“Unfortunately I am a very keen fisherman and I thought it wouldn’t hurt a couple of times to put the watch in the water,” said Bryant.
He was allowed $2OO bail, with a similar surety.
