Engine Failed; Boat Safe
(N.Z. Press Association) INVERCARGILL, Dec. 28. The fishing boat Nautilus returned to Bluff under its own steam after sending out a Mayday call early today. The Riverton-based craft, manned by Mr R. Spencer and his son, of Bluff, returned at 6 p.m. The distress signals were sent at 6.30 a.m., off Codfish Island, near Stewart Island. Local radio stations broadcast appeals for assistance to other boats in the area during the morning. A Southland Aero Club plane searched at the request of the police, and sighted the Nautilus at 11.45 a.m. The call was made after the engine had failed, but when it was restarted the craft made its own way to port.
