Form Reversal By Capella
"The Press” Special Service AUCKLAND. Capella stole a winning break on the home turn and beat Styx clearly to take the first leg of the T.A.B. double, the Commodore Handicap, at Rotorua yesterday. It was his second win in succession in the main event at the Rotorua summer meeting and a sudden improvement in his form. In the Te Awamutu Cup four days earlier he finished sixteenth out of 21. Capella deserved all the credit, but there is not much doubt that with a little further to go he would have been over taken by Styx, which came at a great rate near the finish. Styx was badly placed on the inside and about tenth with a mile to go. With half a mile to go he had only Arragon Lad and Man O Man behind him. Capella was no closer than Styx in the early running but he was able to improve to eighth at the three furlongs, and by the time the field turned for home he was alongside the pacemaker. Second Sight. In the next half-furlong, Capella drew clear and none of the others had much chance. Styx headed Second Sight just short of the post and Sir John, in his first middle distance race after a spell, shaped promisingly for a close fourth. There was a gap to Pacific Prince, the next home, and another to Gay Future and Prince Heroic. The local five-year-old. Pharlon. won the second leg. the Visitors' Handicap. Pharlon looked well in command all the way. He ran up alongside the pacemaker, Tolly, on the home turn and had plenty in reserve at the post, although he was only a short neck ahead of Gold Imp. Pharlon and Gold Imp had the finish to themselves and there was a fair gap to Tolly, which just kept out Clarry. Results:— HAEREMAI NOVICE $1000: 6f. First Division 3 S SPI <231 8-6 R. J.
