Immediate Success After Aust. Trip
The Riccarton jockey, D. N. Hadfield, who had returned to Christchurch on Friday after a business visit to Australia, met with immediate success by winning the Haidon Handicap on Harold Bank at the Hororata meeting at Riccarton on Saturday.
Hadfield went to Australia mainly to look for retail outlets for his pottery work, but he also took his saddle with him. He could have done some of the riding for the Wingatui trainer, A. E. Didham, if he had travelled on to Sydney. Instead he returned to Christchurch, and a winning ride on Saturday gave him reason to believe he might have made the right decision.
Harold Bank was making a successful debut in the colours of his Kaikoura breeder, Mr W. Ford. Threepence shaded him for early speed, but he was never further back than second, and he was in command for the last three furlongs. Harold Bank had only one challenger, Foxgold, but the Southland filly was safely held by a length. Long Slip, which like the winner is trained by J. L. Barr, and was having his first
start, was a fair third, if five lengths back. Then there was a gap of two lengths to Threepence.
