PROHIBITED IMPORTS

Goods Seized At Port (N.Z. Pro, Association) WELLINGTON, Dec. 10. Port agriculture officers today seized five native shields, seven bongo drums, and a quantity of fruit off the Northern Star when it berthed in Wellington. The liner came from England via South Africa. The souvenirs and fruit are not necessarily connected with foot - and - mouth disease, against which New Zealand is taking special precautions, but are prohibited Imports at any time. The clearing of passengers was reported to be a “fairiy smooth operation. There were no problems,” one of the agriculture officers said. “The passengers co-oper* ated fully. They realise foot-and-mouth is a serious disease.

“But there were still quite a number of shoes encrusted with soil and dirt. There’s always the odd person who ab-sent-mindedly throws a pair of shoes into a bag. You’d think they'd know better.”
