CHRISTMAS SHOPPING
New Brighton Hours New Brighton shops will observe normal ChristmasNew Year shopping hours this year. This is different from Christchurch city, which is having two late nights before Christmas. Late nights will be observed at New Brighton on Saturday, December 23, and again on Saturday, December 30. This will make New Brighton the last place open in Christchurch to do Christmas and New Year shopping. It is believed that most New Brighton shops will close at 9 p.m. on both the Saturday nights, but some may possibly stay open longer. “We will be open all day Saturday for 12 hours,” said Mr F. J. Gracie, a former president of the New Brighton Business Association. He said that New Brighton shopkeepers expected large numbers of shop assistants, factory workers and others to invade New Brighton on Saturday, December 23, to do their Christmas shopping. Mr Gracie said it was not true that New Brighton shopkeepers made unfair markups on their prices when the last shopping days before Christmas and New Year fell on Saturdays. “We have heard that criticism,” he said. “It has come from people who are ill-informed.”
