New Building For Doctors
Some Christchurch doctors and dentists who are in cramped or old quarters have joined forces with a firm of pathologists to plan a building of their own. It is to be Tower Buildings, a four-storey building costing about $250,000 at the corner of Victoria, Montreal, and Salisbury
Streets. The site, was previously a used-car lot. The new building? designed by Messrs Griffiths, Moffat and Partners, provides 18,000 sq. ft of accommodation and will have a post office and chemist’s shop on the ground floor. Another floor will be taken up by the pathology laboratory, and the others by medical and dental consulting rooms.
A feature of the interior layout will be the 1200 sq. ft lounge-style waitingroom. It will be in the middle of the floor, with consulting rooms round the perimeter, giving doctors and dentists a spacious joint waiting-room. The lift and stair tower will be at the front of the building to fit ’ into the irregular site. Off-street
parking will be provided behind the building for 30 cars. Made of reinforced and prestressed concrete, the new building is expected to be completed at the end of next year. The contractor is Fletcher Construction, Ltd. The architects are also the engineers for the job, and the service engineering will be done by Mr R. L. Lefebvre.
