ROOFING COSTS
Canterbury Figure
Tile roofs on houses in the Auckland area might be dearer than corrugated-iron roofs, but they were cheaper in Canterbury, said Mr R. Black, manager of the Kaiapoi Tile Company, yesterday. Mr Black was commenting on a Press Association report from Auckland, printed in “The Press” yesterday, in which a large Auckland builder was quoted as saying thht a three-bedroomed house of 1000 sq. ft with a tile roof cost $l6O more than a house with an iron roof. “Production costs are higher in the Auckland area than they are in Canterbury, and I know tile manufacturers get more for their products on the Auckland market than we do here,” Mr Black said. “To tile a roof in Canterbury would cost between $5O and $BO less than a corrugated-iron roof.”
The report said that patriotic New Zealanders building new homes could save overseas funds if they used locally made materials
