SAAB-TRIUMPH
THE Swedish Saab Motor x Company has announced a new car powered by a Triumph engine. The engine has been designed and produced in Britain, and engineers from Saab and Standard Triumph have co-operated on its design for more than two years. The engine is a four-cylind-er of 1700 c.c., mounted in the car at an angle of 45 degrees. It has a single overhead camshaft, and develops more than 80 b.h.p. at 5500 r.p.m. The forged steel crankshaft runs in five main bearings, and the cylinder head is aluminium.
The contract between Saab and Triumph allows for a production of 50,000 engines a year, and this figure can be increased by negotiation. The contract is expected to be Worth about £5 million a year. The general manager of Triumph (Mr G. Turnbull) has said: “Obviously the new engine will play a most significant part in our forward new model programme."
