NEW HOLDENS
A NEW V 8 Holden is expected to go on sale in Australia in February, the Press Association reports from Sydney. The 120-m.p.h. car will be called the Brougham, and will be powered by the 200 b.h.p. 5-litre V 8 used in the 1968 Chevrolet Chevy 11, which is General Motors’ compact car in the United States.
In naming the car on the European measurement of 5
litres the company is leading the way for the Australian motor trade to switch to the metric system, and the 161 and 186 cu. in. Holden engines are also likely to be altered and named in litres, reports say.
Experts who have seen the next Holden range say the design is similar to the Ford Falcon with the “hippie” body line, and appear to be modelled on the Vauxhall Cresta and Viscount models.
The new HK Holdens are expected to have safety features, including collapsible steering, and anti-pollution devices. The Brougham is expected to have four headlights, power steering and windows, and power disc brakes.
The Holden Premier will be retained as a lesser luxury model, the standard car will be called the Belmont, and the Holden Special will be called the Kingswood. All the cars will have 14-inch wheels in place of the present 13inch wheels.
