Fishing Forbidden After Drowning
(New Zealand Press Association) KAITAIA, December 3. A 16-year-old Maori schoolboy who was shellfishing with his father and brothers was drowned at the southern end of 90 Mile Beach yesterday, and a tapu has been placed on fishing for two weeks in the vicinity of the scene of the tragedy.
The boy was Taumatangi Murray, son of Mr and Mrs W. Murray, of Kaitaia. The boy had been diving for shellfish at Reef Point and was seen floating face downwards. At first his father was not alarmed, but when later he saw his son still in the same position, he brought him ashore. An attempt at resuscitation was in vain. Pool Tragedy A nine-year-old boy was drowned in the municipal swimming baths at Whakatane on Saturday afternoon. He was Markus Ival Hjelmstrom, a son of Mr and Mrs K. H. B. Hjelmstrom, of 29 Henderson Street, Whakatane. Found lying at the shallow end of the pool in about four feet of water, the boy was
taken to the side of the pool by another young swimmer, where efforts to revive him were unsuccessful. There were about 200 children in the pool at the time. Found Dead A well-known Marlborough Sounds resident was found dead at his home in Lochmara Bay, Queen Charlotte Sound, on Saturday morning. He was Jack Wintern Pauli, whose launch had earlier been found aground in Double Cove with its engine still running. Sergeant G. T. Mills, of Picton, found Mr Pauli dead on his bed. He was partly dressed and it is thought he collapsed as his launch came alongside his Lochmara jetty late on Thursday afternoon, He apparently fell into the water but managed to drag himself up to the house. Mr Pauli was caretaker for Mr H. P. B. Vavasour, of Blenheim, who owns a holiday property at Lochmara.
