CABINET MINISTER INJURED IN CRASH

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, December 3. The Minister of Customs (Mr Shelton), who broke both legs in a road accident near Foxton yesterday afternoon, is now quite comfortable, according to a Palmerston North Hospital spokesman.

Mrs Shelton, who suffered cuts, bruising and shock, was in a similar condition, he said. The Sheltons’ car plunged down a 40ft bank after colliding with a car towing a boat just south of the Manawatu River bridge at Foxton. A farmer and his six-year-old daughter were killed instantly in a tractor accident on Hillfoot Road, Waiwera South, about six miles from Clinton, on Saturday. They were James Andrew Greenfield, aged 39, and Aileen Diane Greenfield. Aileen was playing with a stationary tractor outside the Greenfields’ farmhouse and accidentally released the brakes. The tractor rolled backwards down the steep drive, and Mr Greenfield, who was washing his hands nearby, gave chase. He managed to leap on to the back of the runaway vehicle, which was gathering speed. As it ran out of the drive into Hillfoot Road, Mr Greenfield applied the brakes, but the tractor lurched, rolled over a sft bank and landed upside down, pinning both Mr Greenfield and his daughter beneath it. Both died of head injuries. The tragedy was witnessed by Mr Greenfield’s wife and their two sons and two other daughters. Struck By Cars A 47-year-old woman died in Kew Hospital late on Saturday night after she was knocked over by a car on the Riverton-Invercargill Highway at 11.25 p.m. She was Mrs May Terese Nilsen, of 296 Barrow Street, Bluff. An elderly man was fatally injured when struck by a motor car on the TimaruPleasant Point Highway at 5.50 p.m. today. He was John Bell, aged 77, a retired farmer, of 25A Guinness Street, Timaru. Mr Bell died in the Timaru Hospital.
