Courtenay Show Well Supported In Spite Of Postponement

In spite of two weeks postponement because of heavy rain on November 18, the Courtenay Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s ninety-second annual show held at Kirwee on Saturday was well supported by competitors and visitors. Entries, generally were up on those of last year, and judges were more than satisfied with the standard in most classes.

The show was the final show of the spring series in the Christchurch and North Canterbury districts. Gate takings at ' $386 were only $22 down on the figure for last year, a pleasing result considering that dull and cool conditions in the early morning gave little promise of a pleasant outing for visitors. There was an overcast sky throughout the day, with a slight but cool breeze. Light drizzle developed in the late afternoon, but it did not interfere with the programme of events. The judge of the Corriedale section (Mr B. J. Johns) said the champion ram exhibited by F. C Bidden was a particularly good example of the breed. The reserve champion, chosen from the shorn ram hogget class, was a good well-grown animal. He expressed disappointment that some good sheep entered were spoilt by plain ears. In the fat sheep section, the judge (Mr M. D. Ryan) said the quality of lambs was generally excellent. Some held from the show postponed two weeks ago were over fat, and other pens were unbalanced. Fat wethers were too heavy for trade requirements. Mr A. H. Busch, judge of the Hampshire Down and Dorset Down sections, said the top Hampshire ram hogget, ewe, and ewe hogget were magnificent sheep, particularly the ram hogget, which gained the championship ribbon. The Dorsets were of average quality. Hoggets in the flock sheep section were found to be particularly good by the Judge (Mr A. T. Stone). Entries in the other classes were a bit short, but the quality was good. In the English Leicester section the judge (Mr H. W. Farquhar) said there were some good ram and ewe hoggets, but other classes were not very well supported. Mr S. C. King, judge of the South Dorset Downs, said the breed was rapidly gaining in uniformity and favour The oneshear rams and ewes were very good examples of the breed. Cattle Classes It was pleasing to see so many extries from the two exhibitors in the Red Poll section, the judge (Mr P. J. Fleming) said. The cattle were up to the usual quality, and the champion bull exhibited by Mr G. R. Bedford was a good example of the breed. Mr W. J. Russell, judge of the Jersey section, said the champion and reserve females were both good specimens of the breed Entries were well brought out and up to a good standard. The judge of the Ayrshires (Mr C. H. Green) said it was pleasing to see such good entries in the section. Horse Classes One or two outstanding horsey were included in large classes in the light horse section, the judge (Mr P. Brophy) said. The others were of average standard which made judging rather difficult. The judge of the hunters (Mr Brophy) said the jumping was of a fairly high standard for a country show. Imperial Blue, ridden by Miss C. Killey, went very well. In the led horse classes the judge (Mr A. G. Green) said the standard was high, out unfortunately in some of the classes where the quality was particularly high there were few entries. G. A. Gray’s Rustic was an outstanding pony which would do well in any New Zealand show. The Judge of the ponies 13 hands and under (Mrs R. R. Bain) said the champion ponies would have held their own at any show. All were well turned out. A good standard was shown in the children’s riding classes. Pacers and manners were not as good as they could have been, especially changing leg at the canter. The Judge of the cob and harness horse sections (Mr A. F. Cunningham) said the harness horses were of a high standard, and the prize winners and champions would win in any company. Some of the cobs were outstanding, but some were not up to the usual standard. A good ever-all standard and even competition in large entries were found in the saddle pony section, said the judge (Mr w. R. A Parsons). The champion was an extremely good pony, but jumping was poor, especially in the maiden classes. fo*^" 1 ?! were as v CHAMPIONSHIPS Horses Hack: Mrs S. H. Simpson’s Morning Spirit; reserve: Mrs J. S.
