BRIDGES LOST

Flooding In Westland

'From Our Own Reporter) GREYMOUTH, December 1. Damage in Totara Valley has been estimated at $16,900 as a result of flooding earlier in the week. The Westland County Council’s engineer (Mr B. G. Dowrick) said the damage had prevented the county staff from traversing the 14-mile Totara Valley road. On Thursday Mr Dowrick was unable to reach the top three-mile streteh. Eight bridges were damaged or destroyed. On Monday debris partially dammed the Totara River at the bridge which gave access to the timber supply of Totara Valley Sawmills. When this burst, two 20-ton piers were swept four chains downstream.

Eight miles of the road was seriously damaged, with washouts, slips and scouring. In places the road was reduced to a width of less than 6ft. Farmers in the area have lost at least 1500 sheep and heaps of logs and silt have been deposited in paddocks.
