DEFENCE OF CUP

Bad Start By Nelson

(N.Z. Press Association) NELSON. Nelson fought back after a disastrous collapse which saw eight wickets fall for 21 runs in an hour in its Hawke Cup cricket defence against Hutt Valley at Nelson yesterday.

Nelson was all out for 101 after being 61/1 at lunch on the first day of the three-day match.

But at stumps, Hutt Valley had also collapsed after a solid beginning to be 93 for six. The collapse began when the Hutt Valley captain, A. E. Dick, was run out for 47. The Hutt Valley off-spinner, G. T. McConnell, wrecked the Nelson innings with six wickets for 31 runs off 30 overs. The first 10 overs were maidens. The Nelson spinner, K. A. Baker, took three for 10 off 19 overs. For Nelson, L. B. Reade hit the top score of 30, and G. E. Lowans scored 27. Dick’s 47 was the best Hutt Valley score.
