Bowlers On Top In Trial Game
Skilful left-arm off-spin bowling by B. Bhana, a pupil at Linwood High School, just failed to enable B. J. Patchett’s XI to score an outright win over I. M. Walter’s XI on the final day of the Brabin Shield (under-20) trial at Hagley Oval yesterday.
Forced to follow-on after being all out in its first innings for 138, Walter’s XI was 222 for nine at the close, still 23 short of Patchett’s XI first innings score of 383 for seven declared.
The only batsman to take • the initiative away from the 1 bowlers for any period was J D. Riley, who had an excellent double of 101 and 47. A left-hander, he was particularly severe on anything near leg stump but scored well all round the wicket, including some delightful square cutting and off-driving. He hit 10 fours in his hundred. Two Good Stands He was involved in two splendid second wicket partnerships, the first of 70 with P. A. Hern (44) and the second of 75 with R. E. Gearry (35). Bhana, with a match analysis of 10 for 82, bowled extremely accurately. Although slow through the air he turned the ball sharply enough to pin the batsmen down. He varied his flight and bowled the occasional wrong-’un. v Scores: B. J. PATCHETT’S XI First Innings 383/7 dec. I. M. WALTER’S XI First Innings I M. Walter b Galwey .. 2 P. A.
