Deficit In U.S.
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) WASHINGTON, Nov. 17. The United States glumly reported yesterday that the nation’s payments’ deficit almost doubled in the first nine months of 1967, and promptly imposed new curbs to restrict the outflow of dollars.
President Johnson meanwhile appointed a high-level task force to try to lure more foreign tourists to the United States—to help offset the millions of dollars spent by Americans on holiday trips to Europe. In another move to beat the dollar drain, the Treasury Secretary, Mr Henry Fowler, said the Government was working on certain stillsecret “selective measures” to encourage American industry to export more aggressively.
