UNIVERSITY VACANCIES THE UNIVERSITY OF SYDNEY CHAIR OF AUSTRALIAN LITERATURE APPLICATIONS are invited for the Chair of Australian Literature which became vacant on the appointment of Professor G. A. Wilkes to the Challis Chair of English Literature. The salary for a Professor is at present at the rate of $10,400 per annum but salary scales for academic staff are at present under review. There is retirement provision under either the Sydney University Professorial Superannuation Scheme or the New South Wales State Superannuation Scheme. Under the Staff Members’ Housing Scheme, in cases approved by the University and its Bankers, married men may be assisted by loans to purchase a house. The Senate reserves the right to fill the Chair by invitation. McCREDIE, Registrar. 3865 THE AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL UNIVERSITY FIELD OFFICER (MALE) NEW GUINEA THE Geography Department of the Research School of Pacific Studies intends to appoint a Field Officer stationed in the New Guinea Highlands from January 1, 1968, Applicants should hold a degree in botany, forestry or a related subject or have experience in botanical field work. A wide interest in field studies is desirable. The appointee will be required to keep meteorological, records, service field instruments and maintain ecological experiments. Simple accommodation is avail, able, but the post is unsuitable for a family man. Appointment, which w’ill be for two years in the first instance, may be, for a graduate, in the Research Assistant grade ($A3815-4837 per annum—limits only), or, for a non-graduate, in the Technical Officer grades ($A3014-3916 per annum). In addition a territory allowance of SASOO per annum will be payable whilst resident in New Guinea. Assistance with passages and accommodation will be provided. A registerable medical qualification is essential. The appointment will become effective as soon as the successful candidate can assume duty. SALARY: $A12,000 a year with superannuation on the F.S.S.U. basis. In addition, the professor will receive a special allowance, on account of his medical qualification, of SAI4OO a year. The Professor will be required to establish a Department of Psychiatry within the new Medical School, to organise the teaching of Psychology for preclinical students and courses in Psychiatry and Psychosomatic Medicine in the clinical years. Provision is made under the new Mental Health Services Act 1967 for the Professor to hold the position ex-officio of Clinical Commissioner of the Mental Health Services Commission and as such his responsibilities will be those of chief adviser in clinical matters within the Mental Health Services of the State. The salary of professors is $12,000 per annum. A salary loading (at present $l9OO per annum) is also paid to medically qualified professors in the clinical school. The University of Tasmania, Box 252 C, G.P.0., HOBART, Tasmania 7001. 2512 THE AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL UNIVERSITY INSTITUTE OF ADVANCED STUDIES THE JOHN CURTIN SCHOOL OF MEDICAL RESEARCH DEPARTMENT OF MEDICAL CHEMISTRY APPLICATIONS are invited from organic chemists for appointment to a Research Fellowship in the Department of Medical Chemistry (Head of Department: Professor Adrien Albert. F.A.A.). Applicants should hold the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy or have had equivalent research experience. The successful applicant will be required to work on the synthesis and reactions of nitrogen heterocycles. The senior research workers j of the Department in this field are: Professor A. Albert, Dr D. J. Brown, Dr W. L. F. Armarego and Dr G. B. Barlin; other senior workers are: Dr D. D. Perrin, E. Spinner, T. J. Batterham and J. Fildes. The salary of a Research Fellow is determined in the range of $5400-$7250 according to qualifications and experience. Appointment is for three years in the first instance with a possible extension to five years. Superannuation is on the F.S.S.U. pattern with supplementary benefits. A grant for travel both ways by the Research Fellow and his dependents is payable, and assistance with housing is provided.
