C.S.B. Grants May Be Cut
The Canterbury Savings Bank would possibly have less available for the local community in the coming year by way of grants, said the president of the bank (Mr G. R. Burrowes) yesterday. This was because of the considerable increase in trading bank charges which the Canterbury Savings Bank would have to meet. The indications were that the increased bank charges could cost more than $lO,OOO This came from estimates based on the transactions for the previous 12 months. The trustees felt that because the C.B.S. was forced to hold a large credit balance at its trading bank it should have received better treatment
Since the announcement of the new charges the C.B.S. had been attracting more depositors daily. Total depositors’ funds in the bank now exceeded s2Bm to the credit of more than 80,000 depositors.
Man Injured.—An elderly man suffered head injuries and was knocked unconscious when hit by a car in Cathedral Square at 10.30 p.m. yesterday. He was admitted to the Christchurch Hospital, where his condition was reported to be fair.
