Car Hits Boat

Only one man was injured, not seriously, when a car towing a speedboat on a trailer and another car were involved in an accident which resulted in a power pole being snapped at its base in Blenheim Road yesterday. Mr Vivian Hanson, of 638 Gloucester Street, suffered head injuries. He was admitted to the Christchurch Hospital where his condition was reported to be satisfactory.

Both cars were travelling west in Blenheim Road, near Curletts Road, about 3.45 p.m. The car following ran into the boat being towed by the car in front, cannoned off the boat and hit a power pole. The trailer and speedboat slewed round and the car towing it twisted sideways and came to a halt 50 yards from the collision.

An outboard motor on the stern of the speedboat was badly damaged. The chassis of the car that hit the pole was almost broken in two. A cutting torch had to be used to free the car from the stump of the power pole before the car was taken away on a breakdown truck. The car towing the speedboat also had to be removed on a breakdown truck.
