Slaughter Grows
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) LONDON, Nov. 17. Nearly 83,000 British farm animals have been slaughtered in the epidemic of foot-and-mouth disease—the highest figure for 40 years. The Agriculture Ministry revealed in a statement early today that the number of outbreaks in north and central England had now topped 440. Nearly 83,000 cattle, sheep, pigs and goats had been put to death with the regulation humane killer—a metal spike fired into the brain. In the last disastrous epidemic, in 1952, there were 495 outbreaks—but only 75,000 animals were slaughtered. The previous epidemics were in the 19205.
