‘Beer By The Pound’

The Royal Hotel, Woodend—reputed to be the only hotel in New Zealand “selling beer by the pound”—will cease this practice soon. The Woodend public pound, almost opposite the hotel, will close from December 1. Controlled by the Rangiora County Council,

the pound Is in disrepair and would need rebuilding, according to the County Clerk (Mr A. A, H. McKenzie). Although no longer a public pound, it could be declared a temporary pound, or stray stock could be driven to public pounds at Fernside or Cust, said Mr McKenzie.
