Jockey Will Retire
(N.Z. Press Association) HAMILTON. J. S. Humphries, a Cambridge jockey who has ridden 149 winners in a career spread over nine seasons, will retire after riding at Avondale on Saturday. His mounts there are Elbejay and Outspan. Humphries will shortly undertake a business enterprise in Taupo. During his career he has been attached to the stables of L. W. Ford (Matamata), J. W. Winder (Cambridge), and W. Sanders (Te Awamutu).’ He has ridden many winners since he brought home Gold Symbol in the Okoroire Handicap at Matamata early in 1961 for his first win. Humphries, who is now aged 26, rode 65 winners during his apprenticeship, which he served at Matamata with Ford. His biggest win was the 1966 A.R.C. Easter Handicap on Rochdale. New Branch Of Breeders’ Assn Last night a meeting of 50 interested persons decided to form a Canterbury-Nelson-Marlborough-Westland branch of the New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association. Mr R E. Adair, of the Ingle-' wood Stud, Kaiapoi, the convener of the meeting, was elected chairman. The Riccarton studmaster, G. H. Murfitt. | jun., was elected vice-i chairman. Members elected to the committee were:—Messrs J. C. Irving and J. C. Robins (Bien heim), R. Simpson and A. J I Blakely (Amberley), M. J. Minehan (Greymouth), P. H ' McGloin (Rangiora), D. B. Clarkson. W. G. Quirk, A. Davis. J. B. Forsyth, and A. R. Bussell (Christchurch). J. p. Aspinal (Timaru), A. Newman (Nelson), D. B. C. Allin (Kaiapoi), and W. R. Lemon (Ashburton). Mr M. O’Brien, of Christchurch, was appointed secretary.
