Changes In Hydatids Scheme Opposed
Transferring the administration of hydatids control to the Department of Agriculture, as recommended by the Hydatids Committee of Inquiry, might relieve local government of one activity, but could only be detrimental to the past efforts of local committees and could result in higher costs, the retiring chairmin of the Wairewa County Council (Cr W. C. Miller) said in his annual report on Friday. Cr W. S. L. Mcßae said he thought counties should oppose the change as far as they could. Both hydatids and noxious weeds schemes appeared to be working smoothly, Cr Miller said. Noxious weeds clearance could suffer a setback from the economic recession, and if so this was to, be deplored in view of the’ call for even greater primary] production. The most recent was the replacement of the de Pass bridge. 1 On the question of plant, iCr Miller said it would be ,of interest to councils to see if the effects of the Transport Amendment Act were cushioned by a special grant for costs during the year. Cr Miller did not offer himself for re-election as chairman of the council, and Cr W. S. L. Mcßae was elected. Cr T. F. Latham paid tribute to Cr Miller’s knowledge. broad views, hard work and tolerance. He had been one of the best chairmen the' council had had. The council! and the county should be I grateful to him.
