Biggest Canterbury Roll At Hoon Hay School
The Hoon Hay School, on the outskirts of Christchurch, with 937 pupils, now has the biggest roll in the Canterbury Education Board’s district and probably the biggest in the South Island.
The board’s annual grading survey shows that next are Linwood North with 806, Kendal 794, Wainoni 780, Northcote 778, Spreydon 771, Aranui 759 and Isleworth 722. The older Christchurch schools have generally retained relatively stable rolls, but fluctuations have been noted at Beckenham, down 76, Woolston, up 42, Wharenue, down 36, St Albans, up 71, Richmond, down 26, and Sydenham, down 25. Schools in the north-west and eastern suburbs continue to increase in roll numbers and the Avondale and Wainoni rolls have risen in spite of the loss of form I pupils to Chisnallwood Intermediate. The three main schools in the south-west suburbs, Hoon Hay, Spreydon and Oaklands, have all increased in roll numbers.
In the Timaru city area, the Highfield School roll continues to rise rapidly, having increased 104 during the year to 589. Timaru South remains the largest Timaru school with a roll of 668, closely followed by Waimataitai at 660. Apart from Highfield, rolls have remained stable and the total number of pupils attending the seven Timaru schools, excluding Gleniti and special classes, is 3760, an increase of 101 on the figure for September, 1966.
Total rolls of the five Ashburton borough schools have increased from 2248 in September, 1966, to 2358 this year. Each school has increased in roll, the largest being at Tinwald, up 35 to 426. The school with the highest roll is Allenton, which has increased 25 to 641. Ashburton Borough. Ashburton Netherby, and Hampstead have increased by 18. 12 and 20 respectively. In the Westland area Hokitika has risen 76 to 538 and has caught up to Greymouth Main, which has increased 29 to 536, excluding special class pupils. Cobden has decreased 24 to 332, and Blaketown and Karoro have each made slight gains to 203 and 139 respectively. The remaining West Coast schools remain fairly stable.
The smallest schools in the board’s district are the four grade I schools at Glen Hope, Glynn Wye, Lees Valley, and Mount Cook.
