TROTTING AUCKLAND PACERS DUE ON TUESDAY
At least three of the Auckland horses nominated will compete in the $2OOO Kaikoura Cup, which will be run over 12 furlongs on Monday week.
Great Adios, Tobias and Viking Water will travel to Christchurch in a Bristol freighter next Tuesday and remain until after the New Zealand
Cup meeting ends at Addington Raceway on November 18. A second aircraft is expected to travel south within a few days of the opening of the cup meeting on Tuesday, November 7, while a number
of other horses engaged at Addington Raceway will travel south by road and sea. The connections of Loyal Knight and Full Sovereign, which will probably be accompanied south by Mountain Pride, earlier announced their intentions of travelling south by road after the Auckland meeting on Saturday night, so it is quite probable they will retain their places in the Kaikoura Cup field. Great Adios, Tobias, Viking Water, Loyal Knight and Full Sovereign are among the capacity field in the F. J. Smith Memorial Handicap at Auckland on Saturday. Originally it had been intended that all those horses would race at Oamaru and Kaikoura before the cup meeting, but plans were changed when the Auckland club made a last-minute change from an open handicap race to a race under invitation conditions, which will not affect the ordinary assessments of horses assessed at 2min lOsec and faster. The Auckland club has a field which would do credit to any dub in New Zealand. The club must now realise that more venturesome programmes can be framed. Attraction Even if Great Adios, Tobias and Viking Water are the only northerners to start at Kaikoura, their appearance will be a tremendous attraction; and if all goes well with them afterwards, it is expected that their appearance will do much to ensure the success of the cup cjrnival.
It is doubtful if there has been such a heavy entry from the North Island at a cup meeting. Some 30 horses have been entered, including quite a number from C. S. Hunter’s Trentham team and several from the middle of the North Island. The Kumeu trainer, D. N. Hayes, said last week that he intended travelling south by road with Herby Tryax and Willie Mac, the last-named being in the Riccarton Stakes and the New Zealand Derby Stakes. Willie Mac came south and contested the New Zealand Welcome Stakes last autumn. He raced well below his best and was never a danger. He failed to do better than fifth at Te Awamutu last week, but will have a chance to redeem himself in the Northern Challenge Stakes at Auckland on Saturday. Single Cash, Scotleigh, Immortal, Highland Flight and Mountain Pride are North Island horses entered for the cup meeting down to race in the Mountain Handicap at Auckland on Saturday. Immortal won at Addington in August, and Mountain Pride and Single Cash trotted quite sound races. They will encounter much stronger opposition on this trip, but they may make Mighty Chief, Le Chant and Johnny Gee work hard to extend their fine records,
Miles Gentry and Tutta Tryax are almost certain to compete at the cup meeting. Miles Gentry will have his final chance to qualify for the cup in the F. J. Smith Memorial Handicap on Saturday. His owner, Mr H. S. Barry, a member of the committee of the Auckland club, expects Miles Gentry to go close to qualifying for the cup.
