CONTROL OF TRAFFIC

Area-Wide System

Area-wide traffic signal control for the central city was approved by the City Council last evening; and the city development committee recommended that the major part of toe scheme should be developed over a five-year period. Recommendations of the committee adopted by the council included that subject to necessary modifications as a result of experience and research the system should provide “vehicle-actuated programme formation” type control, for which a computer would be required ultimately.

The first stage should be the provision of linked signals on Oxford Terrace, Lichfield Street and St Asaph Street from Hagley Avenue to Barbadoes Street and the streets should be converted to one-way traffic.
