College Field Day
"BECAUSE of the increased ■*-* attendance at Lincoln College field days, buses will take fanners to given stop, ping points on the college farms on the field day to be held next Thursday. With large crowds the college has had to limit inspection of the farms to one small area with stopping points within walking distance. This year visitors will be able to see the Grasslands Division trial, the mixed cropping farm, the dairy farm, the research farm and the stud sheep farm. In the afternoon there will be a visit to Ashley Dene. The day starts at 9.30 a.m.
Farmers’ wives are being catered for in tbe horticultural field day which is being held concurrently. The audience will be divided into “general” and “growers’” groups. The general group will be shown the grounds in the morning and the nursery in the afternoon. The commercial group will see the research area and nursery in the morning and the orchard and market garden in the afternoon.
On the farm tours in the morning visitors will be able
to hear from Dr K. F. O’Connor (Department of Scientific and Industrial Research) on the grazing management of lucerne. Professor L E. Coop on crossbred dairy beef cattle and their growth rates. Professor A. E. Henderson and Dr D. S. Hart on the breed improvement of the Border Leieesters at the college, Mr B. J. P. Ryde on the mixed Cropping farm and its progress, Mr E. Vartha (D.5.1J1.) on Western Wolths ryegrass, Mr M. G. Bollard on the town milk farm and Dr R. P. Pottinger on his porina experiments. The New Zealand Agricultural Engineering Institute will be demonstrating the mechanisation of root crops and a new break fence.
In the afternoon at Ashley Dene there will be four stopping points where visitors will hear from Professor J. D. Stewart on light land finances, and Mr P. L. Nuthall on the heavy stocking trial results. Mr G. G. Thomson will tell visitors about the copper deficiency on Ashley Dene and Professor I. E. Coop and Mr V. R. Clark will describe their feeding and fertility experiments.
