Another Record Year For T.A.B.

The Totalisator Agency Board has had another year of records. The most notable of the seven set is an off-course turnover of $77,864,178.

In spite of rising costs profit increased by $115,748 and the surplus of $2,128,232 available for distribution to racing and trotting clubs is the second highest. Expenditure, which was $189,716 higher than last year, has risen by $416,850 in the last two years.

Off-course turnover for the year ended July 31 increased by 4.3 per cent on the previous year, says the seventeenth annual report of the board. During the first half of the racing year turnover rose but for the second six months no increase was shown compared with the previous year. Turnover in the early part of the 1967-68 season clearly indicated that the Government's slowing of the economy was at last affecting the board’s revenue, the report says. The board’s chairman, Mr R. A. Whyte, said at the annual meeting yesterday that it should be made clear that the board was very unlikely In the immediate future to match the profit attained in the last three years and racing and trotting clubs should prepare now for reductions. Four records were set on Saturday, January 21. Offcourse investments that day were $1,246,552, of which $774,150 was bet on the Wellington Racing Club’s meeting. The $326,914 invested for a win and place and $447,236 on the double at the Wellington meeting were records for one club. The record for one trotting club is $477,412, which was handled on the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s meeting on November 8 last year. At 58 of the 404 meetings held during the year the offcourse turnover exceeded the previous off-course turnover of the. club concerned. On-course and off-course turnovers on both racing and trotting meetings rose by $1,880,806J, or 5.27 per cent, to $37,55,451}. The rise for trotting meetings was $971,480, or 6.30 per cent, to $16,394,703. Racing’s share of the offcourse turnover was $58,073,996}, a rise of $2,679,075}, or 4.84 per cent. Off-course investments on trotting meetings increased by $517,246}, or 2.68 per cent, to $19,790,181. Taxation on betting received through the Totalisator Agency Board was $7,279,223. The Wellington Racing Club’s share of the pool is $152,718 —an increase of $5726. The Canterbury Jockey Club will receive $71,857, which is up $2165 on last year. The Auckland Trotting Club, with $81,573, gets the ' third highest dividend from , the pool, and the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club is fourth on the list with $76,463. This is up $7279 on the previous year's figure. The Avondale Jockey Club, sixth on the list 12 months ago, is fifth this year. This club’s share of the pool has risen by $7531, from $67,150. to $74,681.
