Russian Turns Down Award

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) NEW YORK, Oct. 13. A scientist who for years led Soviet efforts in peaceful exploitation of the atom has turned down the Atoms for Peace award, which would have brought him more than. SUS2O,OOO, the “New York Times” News Service reported.

This action was taken in protest against the war in Vietnam by Professor Vasily S. Yemelyanov, for several years head of the Soviet administration for the peaceful uses of atomic energy. The award that he rejected was financed by a Ford grant and controlled by a board of Americans.

The award was to have been divided equally among four men. Each had been a leader in his country's participation in the International Atomic Energy Agency, an affiliate of the United Nations, with headquarters in Vienna,
