“VICIOUS ATTACK”
Seven Years Gaol
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Oct. 13. The Chief Justice (Sir Richard Wild) today sentenced Leo Kafa to seven years imprisonment on a charge of manslaughter. Kafa, aged 26, a foundry worker, and John Sona, aged 26, a welder, were jointly charged with the murder of Hugh Desmond Galligan, of Ponsonby, on June 17. The jury acquitted Sona and found Kara guilty of manslaughter. His Honour said Kafa seemed to be a young man of considerable character. But for drink he would have been a good man and leader among his own people. Drink had Involved him in assaults and fights which had brought him before the magistrates seven or eight times. He had fathered two children by different girls and married neither. He had no assets and no savings, although he had been earning $4O a week. Kafa had spent Saturdays in hotels, instead of playing som e sport which would keep him fit.
“Drink led you to kill a man In a brutal and vicious attack,” said his Honour.
