Motorway Opening
A ceremony to mark the opening of the Northern Motorway will be held by a number of borough and county councils nedr the Belfast Hotel on Tuesday afternoon. At first the Ministry of Works in Christchurch had said in reply to a request from the Eyre County Council that no official opening would be held because only a limited section of the motorway would be in use and there could be some traffic difficulties.
However, in reply to a request from the member of Parliament for Rangiora, Mr H. E. L. Pickering, the Minister of Works (Mr Allen) said he would be delighted to open the motorway. The Ministry of Works would now support a ceremony “other than with money,” the chairman (Mr C. M. Harman) reported to a meeting of the Eyre council. The Rangiora and Kaiapoi borough councils, and the Rangiora and Waimairi county councils had agreed to share«the cost, he said.
