‘National AwardNational Dispute ’

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Oct. 12. The secretary of the Hotel Workers’ Federation (Mr G. Armstrong) said in Auckland today that it was incorrect to say that the 7 p.m. stop by barmen was limited to the four main centres.

“This is a national award and it’s a national dispute,” he said. He said it was originally the intention that the four main centres would be the only places affected, but it was decided to put the 6.30 p.m. “down pumps” all over New Zealand. Mr Armstrong said the strike was successful all over the country, except in Dunedin and Southland.

In Invercargill, the Licensing Trust, which was not a member of the Hotel Association, had paid more money, thus avoiding the necessity of a dispute.

Taranaki hotels and taverns will remain open until 10 o’clock in spite of the barmen’s dispute, says a New Plymouth message. This decision was made at a special meeting of the Taranaki branch of the Hotels’ Association of New Zealand in Stratford today. A Press Association message from Whangarei says all licensees of Northland hotels have been asked by the Auckland Hotel Association to close all bars at 7 p.m. until further notice. The secretary of the Northland Hotels’ Association (Mr J. R. Mcllraith) said late today that he was in the process of sending out 44 telegrams to this effect.
