Church Unity To Take Years
"Church unity is not just around the corner, it will take years,” said the Bishop of Christchurch (the Rt. Rev. W. A. Pyatt) at the annual meeting of the Synod of the Diocese of Christchurch, yesterday.
He was replying to a question from the Rev. S. W. Vincent (Waihao “What will be the position of an Anglican minister who, on conscientious grounds, feels he cannot enter the new church as a minister?” asked Mr Vincent. “Will he lose his licence?
“The whole point about the length of time unity will take is that we can grow together,” said Bishop Pyatt, "ft unity finally comes there will be a new church which ministers will enter. “If a minister does not wish to enter he won’t have to. In this case he will stay in his own old church.
“We pray to God tills never happens,” he said. “The idea of a united church is to have one church, not to start off with five churches and end up with six.”
